Phu Cu District, located in the southeast of Hung Yen Province, spans a natural area of 9,463.94 hectares, with agricultural land accounting for 68.94%. This locality comprises 14 communes with flat terrain and fertile soil, ideal for agricultural development. Currently, the entire district cultivates 1,200 hectares of lychee, including 850 hectares of early ripened hybrid lychee and 350 hectares of egg lychee, with many areas grown according to VietGAP standards.
Phu Cu Hybrid Lychee
Early ripened hybrid lychee in Phu Cu is mainly cultivated in southern communes such as Tam Đa, Minh Tiên, and Tiên Tiên. The district currently has three areas certified to meet export standards to markets in Japan, South Korea, and Europe (areas with OTAS codes).
According to the 2024 report by the People's Committee of Phu Cu District, the total lychee production in the district is 13,500 - 14,000 tons. The harvest period for early ripened hybrid lychee is from May 25 to early June, while egg lychee is harvested in early June, 15-20 days earlier than in other regions.
Mr. Nguyen Kha Phuc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Phù Cừ District, affirmed that the district will provide the best conditions to support residents, businesses, and traders in contracting, harvesting, processing, distributing, and consuming early ripened hybrid lychee. Additionally, cooperatives, production facilities, and farmers in the district will continue to ensure quality and comply with brand regulations during the consumption process. Based on the harvest time, the district will coordinate with the Department of Industry and Trade and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize a lychee fair on June 1 and 2, 2024, at the Ecopark Văn Giang urban area.
Phù Cừ's early ripened hybrid lychee has been a registered trademark certified by the Intellectual Property Department since 2016 and was rated as a 4-star OCOP product by the People's Committee of Hung Yen Province. Phu Cu hybrid lychee is characterized by early ripening, a heart-shaped, asymmetrical appearance, an average weight of 25-30 fruits/kg, produced according to VietGAP standards, with a mildly sweet and fragrant taste.
In late May, the entire Phu Cu district buzzed with the activity of harvesting and trading lychee. Farmers maximized their workforce for harvesting, while traders, trucks, and refrigerated vehicles from across the country flocked to Phu Cu to purchase and transport early ripened hybrid lychee to various markets.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thao, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tam Đa Commune, a key area for early ripened hybrid lychee, stated that Tam Đa currently has 250 hectares of early ripened hybrid lychee, mainly concentrated in Tam Đa village. Despite unfavorable weather conditions in 2024, the projected yield is 80% of that in 2023. However, both sellers and buyers are pleased with the good quality of the fruit, with early season prices ranging from 18,000 to 20,000 VND/kg, and peak harvest prices between 12,000 and 13,000 VND/kg. Harvested lychees are quickly purchased and transported by traders, minimizing inventory. In the future, the market for Phù Cừ hybrid lychee is expected to grow strongly, with harvest values potentially reaching 150 million VND/ha.
